“Friends show their true colors in times of need; and not in times of happiness.”
-Sir Kristian Goldmund Aumann
When my injury initially occurred, strangers, relatives, and friends flooded out of the woodworks offering unlimited support by throwing comments such as, “If there is anything I can do for you, please, let me know.” Talk is cheap, and if you do not want to help a human being, but you do not want to look like a cold piece of work, offering your assistance, “Anytime,” is a good way to put an empty promise on raincheck. If someone really wanted to help you they would not need to talk about it, their actions would speak for themselves. Additionally, if the circumstantial indicators suggest distress, and if somebody wanted to help, they would do so in the time of need, not at a later date. Shannon L. Alder once mentioned, “When you stop living your life based on what others think of you real life begins. At that moment, you will finally see the door of self acceptance opened.” Most people live an inauthentic life by projecting a, “Socially correct” set of values that their genuine attitude does not align with. For example, $80,000 was spent in my first year of recovery alone and my biological father never helped with a single cent towards my therapy yet he was always there to to reassure me that, “If there is anything you ever need, let me know.” Your adverse circumstances has a silver lining and that is it forces the true colors of your sphere of support to to be exposed. For example, people who claim to have your back get tested, new relationships will be made with people who care, and you never knew, and, when your back is against the wall, you will be exposed to your own true colors as well.

Monica Lareda once mentioned, “It is during the worst times of your life that you will get to see the true colors of the people who say they care for you.” Life is like a sports arena, there are people who are against you, people who are on your team and trying to help you, and then there are always cheerleaders on the sidelines who are non in the game but, they cheer you on. These cheerleaders will tell you how much they care, cheer you on and support you when the game of life is going strong however, when the game is over, or you need someone in the game with you, the cheerleaders disappear. The players, in the game of life, do less cheering and more doing, making strategic and passionate moves to win. People who are on your team will coach you to make sure you win. This is because the mentality of true players in life is, if the people on your team is if you win, everybody wins. When you begin to attract fans, and more people are feeding your dangerous ego, the lines become blurred between the real players on your team and the cheerleaders. With that said, times of adversity are necessary to separate the real from the fake, and distinguish everybody’s true colors. Randy Gonzalez said, “Sometimes it’s not the people who change, it’s the mask that falls off.” Most people wear social masks, intended to create a pleasant or respectable appearance for themselves, and in most cases, this presentation is merely a charade. Humans require a sense of belonging and often speak with words of power, with no intention behind it, to fill this void. With that said, the great aspect of adversity is it forces the true colors of individuals in your social circle to shine bright allowing you to separate the real from the fake.
Joseph Campbell said, “Having responded to his own call, and continuing to follow courageously as the consequences unfold, our hero finds all the forces of the unconscious at his side. Mother Nature herself supports the mighty task.” New beginnings often require a new sense of direction, resources, and strength. When you set out on a path, and both work hard and demonstrate that you can handle the responsibility associated with success, you will meet people along your journey to help you achieve your goal. For example, when I wanted to learn how to walk again, and when I was ready for it, a guy came to check out the gym I workout at and completely randomly approached me and asked, “Hey man, I’m Brandon. How does it sound if I set you up with GoFundMe campaign and get into a facility to learn how to walk again?” Being completely penniless, and not very mobile, this relationship was formed at the right time and it was a completely unpredictable encounter. Campbell continues saying, “When the hero [you] is ready, the mentor appears.” When you are in need, relationships will reveal themselves to assist you, when the time is right. More importantly, when you are ready to confront your challenges new relationships will be made to assist and advise you through your experience. With that said, times of adversity certainly exposes the true colors of other people around you however, the truth of your nature gets exposed to the world as well.
Dwane “The Rock” Johnson was a week away from being evicted, had only seven dollars in in his pocket, and he recalled the scenario by saying, “When your back is against the wall the only way out is the work you put in.” Times of tension, chaos, and uncertainty will expose the character of your nature to everybody, including yourself. Instead of being unhappy with the way things are you always have the option to work hard and change it. Furthermore, if no viable opportunities are present, the freedom to create new possibilities for yourself. With said, when you help yourself in adverse circumstances your true colors will shine bright, and that is magnetic. James Arthur said, “Everyone loves a comeback story, and everyone loves the underdog as well.” When you help yourself in adverse circumstances your true colors will glow and people will become attracted to whatever you are going through. Everyone is attracted to positive energy and if display this kind of attitude you will attract the people that you need to overcome aversity, and this is when the people in your life true colors shine.
